weekends rock Last weekend was my 29th birthday and I planned a hum-dinger of wake up, drive to 14er, hike up with everything, set up camp after a long snowshoe, summit, camp over night, wakeup and march back to van, return home and switch and spend the rest of the day rock climbing. Lots of energy would be needed for the big hike and time was tight so we had to move quick. Unfortunately the snow was bad after 11,000 feet and what I was expecting would take us an hour took more like 3. by the time we got through the powder with our overnight packs we were getting pretty drained. Plan B. We scrapped the summit and just relaxed and enjoyed the beautiful surroundings of a frozen lake at 12,000 feet with jagged peaks all around. When night came the moon was as bright as the sun and I could have read a book under the starry night without a head lamp. My excitement the next morning was keeping my body moving at warp speed, overcoming my natural urges of wanting to rest after hardly sleeping the night before. The air is too thin that high and your body just has trouble getting zzz’s. I didn’t care, I was determined to eat up enough sun and trail as I could so I could get on with the next phase of hanging off a rock by the tips of my fingers. I went climbing last week and forgot how fun it is to have a good challenge that doesn’t require trying to breath out your ears but you still get to be outdoors. Our time on the rock marked Alicia’s first successful topout and my realization that I cant do 5.11’s. There are tones of hippie climbers that hang out at Canon City’s mecca climbing area, Shelf Road and with rock that stays snow free all winter long it becomes a great attraction. Now with the weekend over I’m planning the next one and filling in the voids with a little saddle time commuting to work. I’m officially the office freak now cause I couldn’t resist and rode to work without a van stashed. I rolled my bike into my office with my spandex on. I told one guy it was because I had too many DUI’s but the look on his face had me clarifying that it was a joke real quick. Don’t want any rumors like that floating over me. Well, lunch break is just about over and my work is piling up. |
