24 Hours of Moab
Tuesday, October 13, 2009

24 Hours of Moab has been checked off my list and while it didn’t go quite as I planned I felt satisfied knowing I poured everything I had into it. There were 14 awesome hours of charging through the desert for me in 3rd place before things went pear shaped. After that I slogged on at a snails pace for the next 6.5 hours knowing these events aren’t supposed to be easy. I took time between each of these laps to get some more food in me but things just kept getting worse. I was walking almost everything and when I was pedaling even as hard as I could my heart rate wouldn’t go past 110 bpm. I wasn’t in any sort of agony, I just couldn’t move and was struggling with feeling so completely useless. By sunrise I gave up on eating and drinking since my diligence didn’t seem to matter. I had nothing left to give and at 8:30am I turned in my timing chip and surrendered the last few hours of my race.

Looking at the results now I see I actually had an hour lead on my 3rd place when I bailed. That’s a jagged pill to swallow. Now that I think about it, I was in the same situation last year at Big Bear but Alicia cracked the whip and shoved me out there till noon but my two wins at Steamboat came easier. Then again, I had dozens of eight to twelve hour adventures when I was living in Colorado leading up to Steamboat whereas now I rarely ride more than 3 hours. Bahhh, I still just wimped out! That’s the way she goes! I pedaled till I was dead then pedaled some more. At the end of the day that’s what its really all about.
